Land-based nursery expansion Barramundi Asia

Barramundi Asia / Kühlbarra produces Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) in sea cages located in the strait of Singapore. In 2008, Catvis delivered all necessary equipment for a first phase hatchery based on a flow through system. This system was later extended with several RAS systems.

In 2018, an expansion of Barramundi Asia’s landbased nursery was required to supply them up to 1.8 million juveniles each year. These juveniles are raised in a salt water intensive recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) with the addition of pure oxygen to enable higher densities. Other important aspects to achieve a successful intensive RAS include a drumfilter, moving bed bioreactor (MBBR), protein skimmer, degasser, Medium Head Oxygenator (MHO) and UV. The extended time that the juveniles spend in RAS allows for better care and preparation before being stocked in sea cages. This will result in stronger fish and an improved survival rate.

The design of the nursery’s water purification system, the majority of all technical equipment and biomedia were supplied by Catvis. Detailed design, engineering and construction of the nursery expansion were managed by ACE. All plastic components (tanks, MHO, skimmer, MBBR) and piping were also fabricated by ACE. Together, ACE and Catvis supplied Barramundi Asia with a smart looking and efficient system providing them in their need for robust juveniles.
